The Neuron xS50 is an extension module for the UniPi Neuron PLC product line. The module is based on the Neuron S103 controller, the computing module is however replaced by an additional I/O group. Aside from the additional digital inputs and relay outputs, the xS50 module also features multiple analogue I/Os.

The module's I/O boards feature their own processors controlling all inputs and outputs. In the case of a controller failure, the module is thus able to maintain basic functionality. 

Inputs & Outputs

6 digital inputs (DI) are designed for reading logical states (true or false), which are represented by levels of DC voltage. That makes them suitable for reading two-state sensors such as switches (on/off), movement sensors (movement/no movement), water level sensors (water present, no water) etc. The software detects logical 1 (true) if the input voltage between given DIx.y and DIGND is between 5-30V. If the voltage is lower than 3.5V, the state is evaluated as 0 (false)

5 relay outputs are used for control or switching of devices with higher current loads. ROs are thus suitable for controlling light bulbs, thermoelectric valve drives, water heaters, pumps etc. Relay outputs on UniPi controllers are rated for 5A max. current at 230V AC/30V DC voltage.

4 analog inputs (AI) can be used for 0-10V DC voltage or 0-20mA current measuring, making them suitable for reading values from analogue sensors such as temperature sensors, pressure meters, tensometers etc. The xS50's inputs allow the user to perform a precise measurement of voltage, current or resistance based on current output register settings. 

  • voltage measurement 0-10 V (16bit resolution)
  • voltage measurement 0-2.5 V (24bit resolution)
  • current measurement 0-20 mA (16bit resolution)
  • resistance measurement (from PT100, PT1000 or NTC sensors) using three-wire (three conductors, 0-100 Ω, 24bit resolution) or two-wire (two conductors, 0-1960 Ω, 24bit resolution) wiring method.

4 analogue outputs (AO) feature two modes - 0-10V DC voltage or 0-20mA direct current. AI serves for control of devices with analogue input, such as three-way valves, lighting dimmers etc.The xS50's outputs feature 0-10V voltage only.

Additional functionality

Along with standard I/O functionality, the module offers several functions to enhance the module's performance and to allow it to react to critical events.

Digital inputs feature Direct Switch functions allowing for connecting digital inputs with relay outputs. Direct Switch can be configured for one of three modes: Copy (switching output by active input), Invert (output is switched by inactive input) and Toggle (output is switched by each input change). Direct Switch is independent of the control software and is thus suitable for applications demanding a lowest possible response time (such as lighting control).

Default setting is a function allowing each processor to save its default configuration. This configuration is loaded after every device reboot triggered either by manual restart or by a power outage.

MasterWatchdog feature monitors the communication between CPU and I/O board processors. If no exchange occurs within a pre-set timeframe, the MasterWatchdog automatically resets the device and I/O modules back into default settings.

Device addressing and the DIP switch settings

Addressing the extension module can be done either via control software running on the remote master control unit or can be set manually via integrated DIP switch. The DIP switch allows the user to set up to 4 bits of address and is evaluated in preference to software settings. If the address on DIP switch is set to “0000”, all DIP switch settings are ignored and the software settings take priority.

Extension modules communicate over Modbus. It is possible to connect them to the control unit via a RS485 interface. Extension modules are compatible with any control unit with the RS485 interface and Modbus support.
